Ξ What is Lymphoma?

A lymphoma is a malignancy of the lymphatic structures, the most important part of the immune system. The immune system includes various types of cells, grouped in lymph nodes, fighting against infections threatening the body. A lymphoma is derived from the white blood cells also called lymphocytes, which due to unknown reasons start multiplying chaotically. Their accumulation inside the lymph nodes leads to the development of a tumour.
There are 2 main types of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s. For each of these, the therapeutic scheme is clearly established.
Yet there are some rare cases, when lymphoma presents in an atypical form, unclassifiable, with overlapping characteristics between the two classical varieties. In this situation, the correct treatment is not well-established, and constitutes the object of scientific research. This means that this type of grey zone lymphoma is a highly aggressive variety, with an unpredictable, rapid evolution, leading to certain death if left without prompt treatment.
In patients suffering from a malignant lymphoma, standard chemotherapy is efficient in 3 to 4 cases out of 10, the only alternative being a stem cell transplant.
One million patients are diagnosed each year with lymphoma worldwide, that is 1000 patients every day. Out of these, 200.000 die as a result of the disease. About 40 % of patients suffer from aggressive subtypes, which lead to death in 6 months when untreated.
