I am writing from Vienna, where we arrived by train yesterday at noon, after an exhausting journey.A 25-hour ride is a bit too much even for a healthy person, let alone myself. The train arrived 3 hours and a half past schedule and, as a result,we got to the hospital too late, when everyone had already left.We picked up our luggage, made some phone calls and finally managed to find an accommodation. It was getting late and I felt tired.
But today I woke up early, concerned about the illness, and went to the hospital to discuss the treatment plan with Prof Jager.
He politely invited me in his office and thoroughly explained that he had received the biopsy results from the pathologist.Hearing him speak reassured me.He was calm and his voice conveyed optimism. In his words, the treatment sounded simple : aggressive chemotherapy, followed by an autologous stem cell transplant. They have done this many times and it has worked.
At the end of the discussion,he directed us to the administrative office,to discuss the costs with Mrs B.S.
We waited quietly in line for our turn, and after a while we were invited inside the office. They explained that they had talked to the Professor and that they had evaluated the costs at approximately 150.000 euro. They insisted that the costs were individual and that they cannot anticipate all the possible complications related to the transplant. So the amount necessary is bound to vary accordingly. It was obvious that such news could not make us happy.
The other bad news I have are that the treatment may only begin only after the entire sum has been transferred in the hospital’s account. We took pains in convincing them to agree to paying in 2 deposits, which means that 60.000 euro must be transferred immediately.
It is too much in one day.On coming back home,I was in for a surprise: a letter from the students of the Vth B class at the “Elena Cuza” National College.
It brought great joy to my heart and I promise to fulfill their request.
I cannot thank you enough for all your support and encouragement. It helps me discover the bright side beyond all these obstacles.I hope to share better news next time.
